Well, This Little Corn Friend Happened

Some card ideas arrive more quietly than others.

Not this little lady.

She popped in wearing a cowboy hat, carrying a flower, and standing proudly in the middle of summer with her cheerful little thank-you pun.

I first played with corn ideas several summers ago, back in the very early “rough little images, who knew this might become greeting cards someday?” season.

At the time, I had a handful of early cards, and I use the word cards very loosely, heading toward a few Lake Chelan farm stands to see what might happen.

Thank you, Lake Chelan early supporters. I would not have arrived here without your encouragement.

Janet in particular. I’m ever grateful for you.

Because I was in a farm stand frame of mind, fresh corn on the cob made perfect sense. Who doesn’t love hot buttery corn in the summer? Add salt, take a bite, and there it is: cookout joy.

Although I should probably confess something.

I love corn on the cob, but I am also one of those people who cuts it off with a sharp knife. Corn stuck in my teeth is not one of my favorite accessories. Probably not yours either if you’re looking at me across the table. It’s right up there with the spinach-in-your-teeth situation. On a date. Or really, anytime.

Anyway, this became a multi-part corn story.

A friend complimented me for something, and I honestly cannot remember what it was. But I do remember what showed up next:

“Aw, shucks. Thank you.”

Corn shucking. Me, a city girl. And somehow this is where the idea went.

And suddenly I could see it.

A western-style little corn character, cowboy energy, maybe kicking up a boot heel, happy and bashful and thankful all at once.

That card may find its way to the site someday too.

Then, as creativity often does with me, another idea popped in. And then another. And then an entire little popcorn card collection started forming in my imagination.

Truly, ideas are not usually the part where I run out.

This particular card became:

Thank You for Being in My Corn-er

A silly thank-you card for someone who has stood by you, helped you, hosted you, encouraged you, fed you, made you laugh, or simply been in your corner when you needed them.

Or your corn-er.

Because sometimes gratitude can be tender.

And sometimes gratitude shows up as a happy little ear of corn holding a flower.

Both count.
