The Curious Case of the Missing Left Sock
A question drifted into my mind the other evening and, once it arrived, it refused to leave.
Likely the thought was influenced by the fact that the dryer was running while I was watching TV.
Why is it always the left sock?
Not both socks.
Not usually the right sock.
The left one.
Or is it?!
Somewhere in the world there must be a gathering place for all the missing left socks that have vanished over the years.
Maybe it's sock heaven.
You know, a place where maybe there are a lot of bare feet.
At first I assumed they were simply lost.
Now I'm not so sure.
Could they be playing Marco Polo?
And over the years I've noticed something interesting.
A left sock rarely stays missing forever.
Some do, but not all.
Eventually it reappears.
The strange part is where.
One has been discovered tucked inside my husband's long-sleeve T-shirt.
Another revealed itself as the mysterious lump inside a pillowcase.
Others have emerged from blankets, sheets, and assorted laundry items where they had absolutely no business being.
The sock is never where logic says it should be.
It always seems to wait until I've stopped looking.
Then, without warning, there it is.
Almost as if it is saying:
"Polo!"
After careful observation and absolutely no scientific training whatsoever, I have reached the following conclusion.
Left socks enjoy hiding.
Not permanently.
Just long enough to keep things interesting.
I suspect they gather somewhere and compare notes.
One might say:
"I hid inside a fitted sheet for twelve days."
Another might respond:
"That's nothing. I spent three weeks inside a sweatshirt sleeve."
Perhaps there are awards involved.
Maybe there is a championship.
I can't prove any of this, of course.
But I also can't disprove it.
After years of observation, investigation, and laundry-related research, I still have absolutely no idea why they do this.
Life gives us plenty of serious things to think about.
Deadlines.
Appointments.
Decisions.
Responsibilities.
I enjoy wondering about things that don't actually need an answer.
Like left socks.
Or why geese always seem to know exactly where they're going.
Or how one tiny dandelion can create hundreds of floating seeds.
Not every mystery needs solving.
Some simply make life a little more interesting.
So...
If left socks are indeed playing Marco Polo, I would appreciate a little warning before the next round begins.
It would save me quite a bit of searching.
Then again, perhaps the surprise is part of the game.
If you happen to discover a missing left sock in a particularly unusual place, I'd love to hear about it.
I'm beginning to suspect they're all working together.
What do you think?
Perhaps we should consult the great philosopher Sock-ra-tease.
Socrates taught that the only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing.
As for missing socks, I believe we've finally reached that level of enlightenment.
