No One Needs Another Coffee Cup… (But Here We Are)

Simple things feel meaningful because they become part of our daily lives—holding memories, routines, and small moments that quietly stay with us.

Todays little moment happened in the coffee mug aisle of my local thrift shop.

You know the one.

LOTS of cups… some chipped, some beautiful, some you can’t quite figure out why they were ever made—but still, you look.

And then you see one.

And another… and another.

Suddenly you’re holding a cup like it might have chosen you.

That’s exactly where I was.

And somehow, it felt like more than just a cup.

I’ve had this silly idea in my head—to treat myself to a new cup at the start of each month… just for fun.

Wanna join me?

Anyway…

Standing next to me was a woman doing the exact same thing.

Mug shopping.

So naturally, I said it—with a smile (I say it often in that aisle):

“No one needs another coffee cup…”

She laughed immediately. Everyone always does. That’s part of the joy of that section of the shop—the quiet connection with people in the same moment.

“You’re right… but…”

And that “but” is where all the fun begins.

We started talking—about cups, about life—and somehow discovered we had both spent years in the same industry. She had just given her notice last week and was stepping into something new and exciting.

There’s a certain kind of joy in that moment.

A little bit of freedom.

A little bit of wonder.

And she was clearly ready for both.

We ended up choosing between the same two cups.

Hers had violets.

Mine—a deep red and green beauty that felt like it belonged in a slightly more elegant setting.

To be honest, I really wanted both.

Thankfully, the shared moment won out—and I remembered…

“No one needs another coffee cup.”

Before we walked away, I asked her name.

“Lucy,” she said.

So of course I told her:

“Well now… this is officially my Lucy cup.”

Because how could it not be?

In celebration of the new month, I’ll be sipping my next latte with the sweet memory of Lucy.

Would you agree?

Coffee seems to taste better when it comes with a story.

It’s made me realize that what we hold in our hands often holds more than we expect.

So…

Why do simple things feel meaningful?

It’s my belief that simple things feel meaningful because they become part of our everyday lives. Over time, they gather memories, routines, and quiet moments—until they begin to hold a story of their own.

…it turns out I’m not alone in this way of thinking.

I discovered there’s even an International Coffee Cup Museum in Finland displaying thousands of cups from around the world—a quiet reminder that even the simplest things can carry stories worth keeping.

Not everyone is as outgoing as I am. If you ever want ideas for what to say, but more in a card than in person, you might enjoy these words:
