Why Do We Say “Smart Cookie”?

I’m part of a local market co-op that’s become one of my favorite places to saunter and shop. Years ago, I volunteered there alongside Chef Leslie during some of the cooking classes. It was so much fun.

One of my favorite stops is always the bakery.

I seldom make the sweet purchase, but I always look and ponder, then look again while telling myself yes, no, yes, maybe.

You know the conversation, I’m sure.

As I wandered past the cookies recently, I realized something.

It had been years since I’d baked oatmeal cookies from scratch. I would sometimes purchase the co-op’s take-and-bake versions.

Oh gosh, and sometimes, true confession, I would just eat some of the dough raw.

On that trip, though, I decided I would definitely make my own.

I was already imagining thick, chewy oatmeal cookies filled with chocolate chips and dried cherries.

How difficult could adding chocolate chips and dried cherries really be when you’re one smart cookie?

That made me smile.

Then it made me curious.

Why do we call someone a smart cookie anyway?

What Does “Smart Cookie” Mean?

A smart cookie is someone who is intelligent, capable, resourceful, or especially good at figuring things out.

It’s a friendly compliment. When someone calls you a smart cookie, they’re usually recognizing that you think well, make good decisions, or know how to handle a situation.

Unlike some expressions that can sound sarcastic depending on how they’re said, smart cookie is generally meant as praise.

Where Did “Smart Cookie” Come From?

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, smart cookie was being used by 1926 in American newspaper baseball stories to describe a clever or perceptive person. The baked word cookie is much older. It came into American English from the Dutch word koekje, meaning “little cake.” Over time, Americans also began using cookie informally to describe a person. That gave us expressions such as smart cookie and tough cookie. Pairing smart with cookie created a warm, playful way to describe someone clever or capable, and the compliment has certainly stuck. I have to admit, I like this one. It sounds warm. It sounds encouraging. And it makes cookies seem even more delightful than they already are, if that’s even possible.

My Smart Cookie Experiment

The day has arrived.

My butter is sitting on the counter alongside the oatmeal, dried cherries, chocolate chips, and other ingredients.

The plan is a batch of thick, chewy oatmeal cookies with dried cherries and chocolate chips.

Will I faithfully follow a recipe?

Will I confidently wander off on my own?

Hmm, I don’t know that either.

I’ll have to update you later.

Sometimes curiosity starts with language.

Sometimes it starts with cookies.

Smart Cookie Ideas

One of my favorite things about curious phrases is how often they open the door to an outing, a new flavor, or something interesting to notice.

Now that I'm retired (a term I use rather loosely), I love to saunter through all kinds of places.

Here are a few cookie inspired ideas to consider.

• Wander through the baking and cookbook section of an independent bookstore with cookies specifically in mind.

• Visit a local market co-op or farmers market for dried cherries, oatmeal, chocolate chips, and other delicious possibilities.

• Stop by a neighborhood bakery and try a cookie you've never tasted before.

• Sign up for a community baking class.

• Gather the ingredients and spend an afternoon baking with someone you enjoy.

I tried a key lime cookie recently. It wasn't a flavor I'd ever expected to find in cookie form, and it was amazing.

Sometimes the best conversations begin while waiting for cookies to come out of the oven.

Find Your Own Cookie Adventure

Look up the bakeries near you and finally wander into one you’ve passed by many times but only admired through the window.

Then prepare yourself. A true bakery can greet you with an overwhelming cloud of heavenly sugar wonder before you’ve even decided what to order.

One Final Thought

Being a smart cookie doesn’t always mean knowing exactly what you’re doing before you begin.

Sometimes it means being curious enough to try, resourceful enough to improvise, and willing to discover what happens when oatmeal, dried cherries, chocolate chips, and one confident idea all land in the same mixing bowl.

Recipe or no recipe, we shall see.

Wander a Little Further

This phrase began with one ordinary trip past a bakery and led me into language history, cookie plans, and one rather delicious question.
