Curious Food Phrases: Why Do We Say These Everyday Phrases?

Every familiar food phrase has a story, and I’m collecting those stories here for us in the Curious Food Phrases library.

A phrase like “spill the beans” or “piece of cake” is rarely going to pass by without making me wonder where it came from. Once that happens, I know I’m going to look into it. And once I learn something interesting, I’m surely going to want to share it.

So here we go.

We use food phrases every day without giving them much thought. Then one day a question pops into our minds. At least, it does for me.

Why do we say “food for thought?”

Where did “spill the beans” come from?

Why Do These Everyday Phrases Last So Long?

Every phrase has a story.

Some began as practical observations. Others grew from literature, farming, cooking, occupations, traditions, or everyday life. Some have well documented origins. Others are still debated today.

That’s part of the fun.

Every familiar expression invites another small discovery, and every discovery has a story worth sharing.
