The Hidden Histories Behind Familiar Phrases

Last Updated: May 25, 2026

Welcome to my little corner of language, curiosity, and rabbit trails.

Some people collect stamps. I seem to collect questions.

Every so often an ordinary phrase stops me in my tracks and makes me wonder.

Who first said it?

Why did it catch on?

And how did it survive long enough for us to still be saying it today?

Sometimes the answers are surprising. Sometimes they're a little fuzzy. Either way, I love following the trail.

This growing collection is filled with ordinary phrases that made me stop, smile, and wonder where they came from.

Why this page exists

I’ve always loved the way everyday phrases can carry a surprising amount of history, personality, and human nature inside them.

The older I get, the more I find myself wondering where certain expressions came from and why they managed to stick around. (Did I just say “the older I get”?)

What this collection explores

Here you’ll find:

  • the origins of common idioms,

  • the surprising history behind familiar phrases,

  • the way language changes over time,

  • and the stories hidden inside words we use without thinking.

A little note from me

To know me is to know I love words and word play. I’m especially drawn to the way language can be playful, beautiful, surprising, and meaningful all at once. This is my little pray/playground — a space where whimsy and faith-filled inspiration are best buds.

Come back often

This page will keep growing as I add more language stories and curious little posts. If you enjoy hidden histories, it would be an honor if you bookmark this page and come visit whenever you want a little extra delight for your day.

Joy

Joy is the founder, artist, and writer behind Scatter Joyfulness Greetings™, a collection of hand-finished micro art greeting card gifts created in limited editions of twelve.

Through her Studio Journal and greeting card collection, she helps people find words for birthdays, friendships, encouragement, faith-filled moments, and life's many occasions.

Each design begins with a written prompt and is hand-finished one at a time. Her uniquely engineered greeting cards are designed to be sent, displayed, framed, or enjoyed as a keepsake bookmark long after the occasion has passed.

Her work combines artistically directed and carefully prompted artwork, thoughtful card writing ideas, and small acts of kindness intended to help people feel seen, valued, loved, and remembered.

She creates alongside Bunny, her long-haired dachshund and Chief Cuddle Officer, believing that a greeting card can still surprise someone, start a conversation, and put a twinkle in their eyes.
