The First Robins (and a Little Surprise)

Today’s fascination is brought to you by… robins.

Not the round, wormy-bellied kind I expect to see this time of year. These were different. A little lean. Almost like they showed up early and are still figuring things out. It caught me off guard enough to stop and really look.

One in particular—its chest a true, vibrant red. Not the usual soft rust tone, but bold. It perched right in our apple tree… which, just two days ago, finally started to bud.

The moment felt like a little natures announcement. Winter loosening its grip.

We’ve actually enjoyed the tree in its bare state. With nothing in the way, it’s been the perfect stage for our two hummingbirds. They zip from feeder to branches to who-knows-where, all day long. Bunny watches them from the patio doors like they belong to her. We call them her “nature pets,” and she takes her job very seriously.

Sometimes I’ll be sitting at my computer, back to the window, and I’ll see them before I hear them—tiny shadows flickering across my screen. Quick little flashes of movement. It makes me smile every single time. (There’s one out there right now. I just caught its shadow again.)

And then today—the robins.

Slower. Not darting like the hummingbirds, simply steady. Even in their leanness, they felt sure of themselves. Like they know something is on the way, even if it’s not fully here yet.

You might be surprised to learn there are actually different kinds of “robins.” The ones visiting us here are American robins, often seen as a sign that spring is beginning to stir. If you’re curious, you can learn more about them here: Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

But what stayed with me wasn’t the timing. It was the contrast.

Lean birds.

A budding tree.

Speedy motions.

The hummingbirds still flitting through bare branches like it’s mid-winter.

All of it happening at once.

There’s something kind of wonderful about that—how different stages can overlap without needing to be sorted out.

Nothing fully finished. Nothing fully begun.

Everything in it’s perfect timing.

Hugs & Smiles,

Why Do Bunnies Feel So Joyful?

And How They Became a Symbol of Spring

Being that it’s spring—and my Chief Cuddle Officer, Bunny, is never far from my side—I have a special place in my heart for these whimsical little fluff balls.

(You’ll sometimes hear them called rabbits—but to me, they’ll always feel like bunnies.)

Soft and fluffy.

Playful and peaceful.

Maybe it’s the way they seem to freeze
and then look right at us.

Or the way they hop instead of hurry.

A Little Story Behind Their Softness

As winter fades, rabbits are often among the first animals to reappear—quietly active, present, and full of life.

Because of this, many early traditions began to associate them with renewal, new beginnings, and the return of warmth.

Over time, observations like these shaped what we now recognize as the Easter bunny—a soft symbol of life returning after a quiet season.

Being a “bunny” owner (ok, that’s just my COO’s name but still - I had to look into historical summaries from sources like the Smithsonian Institution and early European folklore traditions. Why not?

Places like the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC continue to care for and study animals like these—quiet reminders of how much there is to learn from the natural world.

Did you know…

A group of bunnies is called a “fluffle.”

They can leap surprisingly high and far in a single bound…

(and so can my girl, right off the sofa).

When they’re especially happy, they do something called a “binky”—a little jump with a twist in mid-air.

Have you ever seen one do this? It’s adorable.

Also, their ears help regulate body temperature, acting as a natural cooling system.

I believe that there’s something about spring that brings

A little extra sparkle.

A little more color.

A little more laughter.

And yes…

a little more hoppy joy.

If a bunny made you think of someone…

you might enjoy sending a little moment like this.

Because some days just call for something cheerful.

Something unexpected.

Something that makes someone smile the moment they see it.

And honestly…

that might be the best kind of day to share.

Where the Day Begins

Quiet early morning scene with a blue floral mug topped with latte foam, a candle glowing nearby, an open book, and a small dachshund figurine, capturing a peaceful start to the day.

A Quiet Morning Rhythm

There’s a rhythm I’ve come to love—the kind that begins before the world feels fully awake. It’s 6:40am right now. I’ve been up since 4:30am.

In these early morning moments, it feels like a quiet gift waiting for me. The light is soft, the day hasn’t asked anything yet, and everything feels…possible.

I sit with my latte by my side, a candle flickering nearby, my Bible open, and Bunny tucked into my lap - a perfect fit. It’s simple, and steadies me in a way that’s hard to explain unless you’ve felt it too.

This quiet time has become how I begin my day.

I bring whatever is there that morning—sometimes clear, sometimes a little tangled. Thoughts I haven’t sorted out, things I’m carrying, things I’m hopeful about. I don’t wait until I’ve figured it all out. I just bring it as it is.

And that’s where things often shift.

There’s a quiet reassurance that meets me. Not loud or dramatic… just steady. A reminder that I don’t have to force answers or carry everything on my own. That wisdom is something I can ask for and trust will come ~ (James 1:5)

From there, the rest of the day begins to unfold.

Not perfect, not without its stretching moments—just different. More grounded. More open. Like I’m moving with the day instead of being pushed by it.

I’m starting to see how much these early minutes matter. How, for me, they shape everything that follows.

Not a long routine. Not anything complicated.

Just a small, intentional beginning.

And somehow, that beginning carries forward—into a kinder words, slower pauses, and moments I might have missed before.

I’m learning that, like a garden, this is how life grows.

If no one has told you yet today… you are held, you are seen, and there is goodness waiting for you in your very day.

Yours in scattering joyfulness,

Joy

A Small History of Greeting Cards

A delightful look back at the beginnings of greeting cards—where art, meaning, and thoughtful connection first came together.

Long before greeting cards filled store shelves, they were small works of art shared between friends.

In the late 1800s, a printer named Louis Prang helped introduce beautifully illustrated greeting cards to America. His colorful lithographic printing methods allowed artists to reproduce detailed artwork in ways that had never been widely available before.

Because of this, Prang is often called the Father of the American Christmas Card.

His goal was simple but meaningful:
to help people share beauty, kindness, and thoughtful messages through the mail.

In many ways, greeting cards have always been connected to the newest creative tools of their time.

As technology changed, artists adapted.

Printing methods improved.
Photography entered the world of cards.
Graphic design became digital.

Today, artists have even more tools available — including digital illustration and AI-assisted imagery — but the heart of a greeting card remains the same.

A greeting is still a small moment of human connection.

A Personal Note

Years ago I was also an early adopter of new creative technology.

My first camera for portrait photography was a Sony Mavica, which stored photos on floppy disks. At the time it felt incredibly new and experimental.

I didn’t have formal training and learned mostly through curiosity and trial and error. Many of my early portrait sessions came through word of mouth, and what began as a small side project - know called a side hustle - grew into one of my most enjoyable creative adventures.

Looking back, it reminds me that creativity often grows alongside new tools.

The tools may change.

But the heart behind creating something meaningful for another person remains beautifully the same.

A Tradition of Small Joy

Every Scatter Joyfulness Greeting continues that tradition in a simple way.

A small piece of “micro” art.
A thoughtful message.
A moment shared between people.

And just like the greeting cards that came before them, each one is meant to carry a little joy out into the world.

…and so the Scatter Joyfulness journey has begun.

I hope you’ll join me.

Hugs & Smiles,
Joy & Bunny

A short note celebrating the couple and wishing them happiness in their life together is always appropriate. Whether your message is heartfelt, joyful, or simple and sincere, the most important thing is that it reflects your genuine happiness for them.

The Story of Scatter Joyfulness Greetings™

Pull up a chair and let’s have a virtual latte together!

My morning began in the stillness of 5:00 AM, but the real magic happened around 7:00 AM. That’s when the light finally found me in my big comfy chair, peaking through the window to say hello. I settled in with one of my many "favorite" coffee cups—this floral beauty won the lottery today!—and embraced a warm, frothy hug of a latte alongside my two quiet companions.

Coffee cup with creamy foam beside glass heart objects, warm morning light, peaceful reflective moment, personal lifestyle image for Studio Journal

The red glass heart was a gift from a dear friend, and just recently, this tiny, luminous blue one arrived to keep her company. Watching the dawn light begin to reflect through the glass got me to reflecting, too—about all kinds of things from my creative past. I realize that I see the world in my favorite way: through a lens of curiosity, whimsy, gratitude, and personal faith. These hearts remind me that the real treasure is the weight of the friendships they represent. To my many friends: I appreciate and love you.

100 Floppy Disks in Paris: A Digital Pioneer’s Journey

It made me smile this morning, thinking about how far this creative journey has taken me. I was a "digital pioneer" before it was cool! I remember traveling to Europe in the Sony Mavica days, literally carrying 100 floppy disks and a stash of batteries in my backpack. There were no security lines to worry about back then—I just carried a litany of plastic disks and supplies through the streets of Paris to capture whatever inspired me. (Which was everything!) Those images are now stored on CDs... remember those?

I can still hear the humming of that camera etching Parisian moments onto magnetic disks. It was clunky and slow, but it was the start of a 30-year love affair with capturing emotion. While I recently sold my high-end Canon gear to fully fund this Scatter Joyfulness mission, that same "backpack full of disks" spirit is sitting right here in my heart to this day. Hello, World! ❣️

The Scatter Joyfulness Greetings™ site officially launched this week! I am in the absolute happiest season of my life, and I anticipate my enthusiasm to meet and make new friends will only grow.

If you're wondering if these words are me or AI—the answer is "Yes!" To know me personally is to know I’m a bubbly, enthusiastic sharer with a permanent smile and a gift for gab. I tend to think in whimsy and write in excited circles—sometimes with no rhyme or reason to anyone other than me!

I’m discovering that, for me, AI is a gift. It "reels me in" and helps me find straighter, calmer paths to the hearts of others so my enthusiasm doesn't get lost in the clouds. This journaling space is a super great outlet for that "uber-enthusiastic" girl inside me. To those who know me: thank you for always putting up with my "gift of gab!"

A New Way to Give: Collectible Micro Art Greeting Card Gifts

Welcome to a brand new category of giving. I’ve often struggled to call what I do a "greeting card," because, in my heart, it’s much more an art category than a card category.

These are Collectible Micro Art Greeting Card Gifts.

Think of them as tiny, frameable masterpieces designed to spark a soul-to-soul connection. They aren't meant to be tossed in a bin after a birthday; they are meant to be kept on a desk, tucked into a favorite book as a tassel bookmark, or placed in a 5x5 frame to brighten a corner of your home. By numbering each piece in a tiny edition of only 12, I’m ensuring that what you hold in your hand is a rare, artisanal treasure. It’s a "warm hug" that lasts long after the envelope is opened.

A Digital Seed: Sharing the Light

Before I let you go back to your day, I want to leave you with a little "Digital Seed."

In this season of my life, I truly feel like a vessel. My greatest honor is putting my heart and soul into these designs so that they can become a bridge for your heart to reach someone else. It’s all about that soul-to-soul connection—the kind that reminds us we aren’t alone and that we are deeply loved. It’s not about me; it’s about the connection I get to help you create.

Inspired by the yellow daffodils nodding in our direction as Spring arrives, I’ve created a digital sticker of the (true fact!) March birth flower. Think of this as a gift from my soul to yours and beyond.

You’re invited to help me Scatter Joyfulness today:

  • Save this image to your phone.

  • Text it to a friend who needs a "warm hug."

  • Share it to let someone know you’re thinking of them.

A small digital “seed of joy” — a daffodil sticker created for the Scatter Joyfulness community to share kindness and brighten someone’s day.

Let’s see how much light we can scatter together!

Yours In Scattering Joyfulness,

Joy

Joy in an Envelope

Message ideas for what to write in a card, with simple and heartfelt wording to help you say it in a way that feels as personal as your heart speaks ♡

The Simple Power of a Greeting Card

I’ve always loved the moment a greeting card appears in my mailbox. It truly never gets old. Would you agree?

Even before opening it, there’s a spark of anticipation. Someone chose a card, wrote my name across the envelope, and placed it in the mail with me in mind.

Most of the time my first response is simply, “Awe” with a grateful smile.

In a world filled with quick messages and notifications, greeting cards still carry something meaningful.

Where the Tradition Began

I enjoy learning where everyday traditions come from, and greeting cards have an interesting history.

Maybe you’ll find this interesting as well.

Decorative greeting cards became popular in the United States during the late 1800s when printer and artist Louis Prang began producing colorful holiday cards. His printing techniques allowed beautiful artwork to be reproduced and shared through the mail.

People embraced the idea quickly. Sending illustrated cards became a new way to connect with friends and family.

Over time the tradition expanded beyond holidays to include birthdays, encouragement, friendship, celebrations, and simple everyday kindness.

Creativity Through Time

Sometimes I think about how art has always evolved alongside the tools available in each generation.

Long before printing presses, people created images with charcoal on cave walls, carved symbols into stone, and painted with natural pigments.

Later came printing presses, photography, and eventually digital cameras.

I still remember the excitement of using one of the early Sony Mavica cameras that saved photos on floppy disks. At the time it felt amazing to capture images digitally and share them.

Today another creative tool has entered the picture: artificial intelligence.

For me, every greeting still begins the same way — with a thought, a feeling, or a moment that inspires the prompt I write.

The tools may change, but the heart behind sharing creativity remains the same: expressing something meaningful and passing it along to someone else.

Why Cards Still Matter

Sending a greeting card takes a little more effort than sending a text message.

But I believe that effort is exactly what gives it meaning.

Choosing a card.
Writing a message.
Addressing an envelope.

Those small actions communicate care in ways quick messages rarely do.

I know we’re all busy, do keep texting but . . . maybe consider a deeper layer.

That may be why many people save the cards they receive. A few sincere words can continue bringing warmth long after the moment has passed and the card is a tangible reminder.

A Little Inspiration to Begin

Sometimes the hardest part of sending a card is simply knowing what to write.

So get out your favorite pen, be creative and do a mix & match.

I encourage you to use the many message ideas I’m sharing in my Studio Journal. Your version will be beautiful—just as your heart leads it. ♡

You can also refer to the message starters in this Studio Journal if you ever find yourself wondering what to write when the words feel hard.

Snow Globe Morning

This morning brought an unexpected surprise.

Snow began falling outside the studio window — not blowing or swirling, but drifting straight down in a steady, quiet way. Flakes of all sizes floated gently to the ground, almost like someone had tipped a giant snow globe over the neighborhood.

The trees slowly gathered soft white layers and the grass became mostly covered, while the pavement stayed clear and safe.

Curious how Bunny would react, I carried her out to the back patio.

What surprised me most was the sound.

The spring birds were singing.

I had expected the quiet that often comes with snowfall, but instead there was cheerful chirping and little songs coming from the trees. It felt like winter and spring had quietly decided to share the same morning.

I went back inside, warmed up my coffee, and stepped outside again for a few minutes.

The air was crisp and fresh. I took a few deep winter breaths and sat still while the snow continued its gentle fall. After a few minutes the chill reminded me it was time to head back inside.

But for those moments, it felt like a small gift of the day.

Just a quiet reminder that unexpected moments can bring a little extra joy.

Hugs & Smiles,
Joy & Bunny
